Love's Labour's Lost
(2025)

As Assistant Scenic Designer for CalArts' 2025 production of 'Love’s Labour’s Lost,' I collaborated with lead scenic designer Macine Johnson from the initial development stages to the final realization of the set. My role involved assembling the conceptual model (including modeling 3D elements and printing them), contributing early conceptual drafting, and finding references for set decoration. I also helped with the installation and finishing of key scenic elements, including applying scenic treatments to the scrims- an invigorating challenge that expanded my technical expertise.

Conceptual Model
An image of the conceptual model of Macine's final vision of the show's set design. I primarily helped in creating any major set pieces which needed to be digitally modeled and 3D printed; this included the miniature scrim frames and the above head track in which the scrim frames could glide easily across, as well as the grid in which the track would latch onto from above.

Scenic Paint Process
Macine made it clear early on that this design would rely heavily on precise scenic paint treatments. It became the most daring aspect of the process, as the visuals were highly specific and had to be executed on scrims- two of which moved back and forth across the set. Painting on such a transparent material posed a unique challenge, requiring careful control of water content and pressure to ensure the right consistency and opacity. The checkered floor also demanded exact precision; we spent a great deal of time securing and aligning the masking tape to achieve clean, crisp lines. One of the most enjoyable elements to paint was the cloudscape on the semicircular scrim in the back, using a dry brush technique that mimicked the natural, flowing quality of real clouds.
