100 Years of Solitude
(2025)

One of the final projects I had the pleasure of working on at CalArts was a theoretical production of Gabriel García Márquez’s 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' at New York's Theater for a New Audience. Although the production was never intended to be fully realized on stage, the project required me to approach the work with the same attention to detail and professionalism as a live production. I developed a complete scenic design package as if presenting to a director and production team...

The process emphasized translating Márquez’s magical realism and decades-long storytelling into a visual language- balancing the cyclical nature of time, the rises and falls of Macondo, and the emotional weight of memory within a single limited physical space. Rather than illustrating the story literally, the design focuses on atmosphere, transformation, and nature, allowing the environment to slowly evolve in small ways alongside the narrative. This project challenged me to think critically about adaptation, abstraction, and how scenic design can hold both realism and myth simultaneously.

Color/Texture Study & Sketch
The earliest elements of this design process. As the novel takes place over a century, changes to the central village of Macondo do occur. Natural elements and textures gave me a consistent style to hold onto through the design.
